Professional fortune telling remains a genuine, actively used practice in Hong Kong rather than a tourist novelty — consulted by many residents for guidance on business decisions, relationships, or simply reassurance, alongside (and sometimes combined with) the feng shui consultations covered in our feng shui guide.

A dedicated arcade of small booths beside Wong Tai Sin Temple (see our Wong Tai Sin guide) houses dozens of professional fortune tellers side by side, some working in English — the most accessible entry point for a curious visitor.

Common methods

Face reading (interpreting facial features), palm reading, and kau cim (drawing a numbered bamboo stick after shaking a container, then having a fortune teller interpret the corresponding fortune slip) are among the most commonly practised methods, often used alongside each other rather than as separate, competing systems.

Trying it as a visitor

A short, informal consultation is generally inexpensive and approached in the spirit it's offered — genuine cultural curiosity rather than deep personal decision-making is a reasonable way to engage with it as a visitor, and confirming a price before starting avoids any confusion afterward.
