Kung fu & martial arts heritage

Beyond the martial arts films that made Hong Kong cinema internationally famous (see our cinema history guide), the underlying martial arts traditions themselves remain genuinely practised, taught and passed down across the city.

Wing Chun and its Hong Kong connection

Wing Chun, a close-range striking style, became particularly associated with Hong Kong through grandmaster Ip Man, who taught in the city from the 1950s and whose students included Bruce Lee — a lineage now well known internationally partly through a series of biographical films.

Schools open to visitors

A number of martial arts schools across the city offer trial classes or short workshops for visitors curious to try a style firsthand rather than only watch — generally requiring advance booking rather than a walk-in.

Lion dance training

Lion dance troupes (see our lion & dragon dance guide) often draw performers from a martial arts background, since the athleticism and acrobatics involved overlap significantly with traditional training.

Bruce Lee's Hong Kong

Beyond the Avenue of Stars tribute already mentioned in our cinema history guide, various sites around the city retain informal connections to Bruce Lee's life and training, of interest to dedicated fans even without a single major dedicated museum.
