Hong Kong is generally relaxed with visitors, but a handful of everyday habits will make interactions smoother.

Everyday manners

• Stand on the right on MTR escalators; the left lane is for walking.
• Queuing is taken seriously — look for the line, even where it isn't obviously marked.
• Tipping isn't customary but a 10% service charge is common on restaurant bills — check before adding more.

At the dining table

Tea is often poured for the table before a meal starts; tapping two fingers on the table lightly thanks whoever poured it. Dishes are shared, and it's normal for the host or eldest at the table to order for the group.

Temples and religious sites

Dress modestly, keep voices low, and ask before photographing people who are actively praying.
