Korean & Japanese food in Hong Kong
Korean and Japanese food have an unusually deep, long-established presence in Hong Kong, well beyond what might be expected from geographic proximity alone — entire streets and shopping-mall floors are given over to Korean or Japanese dining specifically.
Japanese food
Sushi, ramen and izakaya-style restaurants are extremely widespread, ranging from high-end omakase counters to affordable chain ramen shops — Hong Kong's proximity to Japan and strong historical trade and travel links have made it one of the most Japanese-food-literate cities outside Japan itself.
Korean food
Korean barbecue, fried chicken and Korean-style cafés have grown substantially in the past decade, driven partly by K-pop and Korean drama popularity among younger residents — Causeway Bay in particular has a visible concentration of Korean-focused restaurants and shops.
Why the presence runs deep
Beyond trend-driven popularity, both cuisines benefit from established supply chains and long-resident Japanese and Korean expatriate communities who've shaped what's available and its authenticity over decades, not just the past few years.
Where to look
Causeway Bay and Central both have strong concentrations of both cuisines, while quality options are genuinely spread citywide rather than confined to one obvious district.
