Southeast Asian food in Hong Kong

Beyond the South Asian food scene already covered in our South Asian food guide, Hong Kong has substantial Filipino, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese communities, each with their own visible food presence around the city.

Filipino food

Central's Statue Square and the surrounding streets become a genuine Filipino community gathering point on Sundays, the standard day off for many domestic workers, with informal food stalls and nearby restaurants serving dishes like adobo and lumpia.

Indonesian food

As mentioned in our Shek O guide, a long-established Indonesian community has left a genuine restaurant presence in pockets of the city, serving dishes like nasi goreng and rendang.

Thai and Vietnamese food

Kowloon City (see our Kowloon City guide) is the best-known concentration of Thai restaurants in the city; Vietnamese restaurants, particularly serving pho, are more evenly spread across several districts.

Why it matters

These communities are long-established, not a recent trend — part of the same layered migration history that shaped the regional Chinese cuisines covered elsewhere on this site, and genuinely worth exploring rather than defaulting only to Cantonese food.
