What a Hong Kong hotel room is really like

Room size is the single most common thing that surprises first-time visitors to Hong Kong hotels — even well-reviewed, expensive properties often have noticeably smaller standard rooms than equivalent hotels in North America or much of Europe, simply because of how scarce and expensive land is.

Why rooms run small

Hong Kong has some of the highest real-estate density and cost anywhere in the world — hotel floor space is a direct cost in a way it isn't in cities with more room to build outward. Budget and mid-range hotels in particular optimise heavily for efficient layouts over generous square footage.

What to actually check

• Room size in square feet or square metres, if the listing provides it — a genuinely useful number that basic star ratings and photos don't capture well.
• Bed configuration specifics if travelling as a family or with more than two people; "family room" doesn't mean the same thing across hotels.
• Window presence — some budget rooms, particularly in older buildings, genuinely have none.

Where to expect more space

Newer luxury properties, serviced apartments (see our serviced apartments guide), and hotels further from the very centre of Central or Tsim Sha Tsui tend to offer more generous room sizes for a similar price point.
