Bike share & getting around without the MTR
Beyond the MTR and Octopus card basics already covered in our transport guide, a few newer options fill in specific gaps — useful for shorter hops or areas the MTR doesn't reach directly.
Bike share schemes
Dockless and station-based bike share operators serve several New Territories new towns and some waterfront areas, generally accessed through a smartphone app — more practical in the flatter, more cycling-friendly districts covered in our cycling guide than in the hilly urban core.
Ride-hailing apps
Ride-hailing apps operate alongside traditional taxis, offering upfront pricing and cashless payment — a straightforward alternative when a taxi isn't readily available or a specific pickup point is easier to coordinate through an app.
Minibuses
Green and red minibuses fill gaps between the MTR and full-size bus network, often faster on shorter routes, though they can be harder for first-time visitors to navigate since stops and routes are less clearly signed in English than the MTR.
Where walking still wins
For genuinely short distances within a single district, walking remains faster than waiting for any of the above — Hong Kong's density means many "trips" are only a few minutes on foot once you're oriented.
