The MacLehose Trail & Trailwalker
Beyond the short, accessible sections already covered in our hiking guide, the full 100km MacLehose Trail is a serious multi-day (or, for dedicated hikers, single ultra-endurance day) undertaking across the New Territories.
The full trail
Divided into ten sections of varying difficulty, running from Sai Kung in the east to Tuen Mun in the west, the complete MacLehose Trail passes through some of Hong Kong's most scenic and remote country park terrain.
Oxfam Trailwalker
An annual charity event in which teams attempt to complete the entire 100km trail, typically within 48 hours, raising funds for Oxfam — one of the original events of its kind globally, having directly inspired similar Trailwalker events now held in other countries.
Attempting sections independently
Outside the organised event, hikers regularly tackle multiple sections over a weekend, camping at designated sites (see our camping guide) along the way rather than attempting the full distance in one push.
Preparation matters
Heat, humidity and genuinely steep sections make this a serious undertaking rather than a casual walk — proper preparation, sufficient water, and honest assessment of fitness level are all essential before attempting more than a short section.
