Surfing & windsurfing
Hong Kong isn't a major surf destination, but a small, genuine board-sports scene exists, shaped by its exposed eastern and southern coastlines catching swell during typhoon season specifically.
Big Wave Bay
On Hong Kong Island's south-east coast near Shek O (see our Shek O guide), Big Wave Bay is the best-known local surf spot, with rentals and lessons available, though genuinely rideable waves depend heavily on typhoon-season swell rather than being a year-round guarantee.
Windsurfing at Stanley
Stanley (see our Stanley guide) has a long windsurfing tradition, notably as the training ground of Lee Lai-shan, Hong Kong's only Olympic gold medallist, who won in windsurfing at the 1996 Atlanta Games — a genuine point of local sporting pride.
Realistic expectations
Conditions are modest compared to major surf destinations, and rideable days depend on swell that isn't guaranteed — treat it as a fun, low-key local activity rather than a trip centred entirely around it.
Getting started
Rental and lesson operators at both spots cater specifically to beginners, making either a reasonable first-timer's introduction to the sport if the conditions are cooperating that day.
