Best sunset & sunrise spots
Beyond the viewpoints already covered in our viewpoints guide, timing a visit specifically around sunset or sunrise changes which spots make the most sense — direction matters as much as elevation.
Best sunset spots
Victoria Peak and Lugard Road face broadly west/southwest, giving a good sunset view over the Island and out toward Lantau, while the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade times well with the skyline's evening lights coming on as the sun goes down over the harbour behind you.
Best sunrise spots
East-facing beaches like Big Wave Bay and Shek O (see our Shek O guide) work well for sunrise, along with hilltop spots like Dragon's Back for those willing to start hiking before dawn.
The nightly light show timing
If aiming to catch both sunset and the nightly Symphony of Lights (see our fireworks & light show guide) in one outing, arriving at a harbourfront spot shortly before sunset lets you watch the transition from daylight to the evening light display without needing to move.
Practical notes
Hong Kong's exact sunset and sunrise times shift meaningfully across the year and aren't something a static guide can give reliably — check a current source for your specific travel dates rather than assuming a fixed time.
