The West Kowloon Cultural District has turned Hong Kong into a genuine museum destination over the past few years, alongside a set of smaller, longer-established collections around the city.

M+

A large museum of visual culture covering design, moving image and contemporary art, housed in a striking horizontal building on the West Kowloon waterfront.

Hong Kong Palace Museum

Sitting alongside M+, this museum shows historical artefacts and treasures on rotating loan from Beijing's Palace Museum, alongside its own collection.

Smaller, longer-standing collections

The Hong Kong Museum of History gives a thorough, well laid out overview of the territory's past; the Hong Kong Museum of Art, on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, focuses on Chinese and Hong Kong visual art.

Independent galleries

Hollywood Road and the surrounding Sheung Wan streets hold a dense cluster of smaller commercial galleries, free to browse and a good way to see what Hong Kong's contemporary art scene is actually making right now.
