Spectator sports: the Hong Kong Sevens & beyond

Beyond horse racing at Happy Valley and Sha Tin (see our Happy Valley guide), Hong Kong has a livelier spectator sports scene than its reputation might suggest, anchored by one genuinely famous annual event.

The Hong Kong Sevens

An annual rugby sevens tournament held at Hong Kong Stadium, drawing international teams and a famously boisterous, costume-heavy crowd — one of the most popular stops on the World Rugby Sevens circuit and a major date on the city's sporting and social calendar. Tickets sell out well ahead, so booking early matters if your trip lines up with it.

Horse racing

Weeknight races at Happy Valley draw a lively mixed crowd of serious bettors and casual spectators, already covered in more detail in our Happy Valley guide, with Sha Tin's larger racecourse (see our Sha Tin guide) hosting bigger weekend meets.

Basketball and football

Local basketball and football leagues have a smaller but genuine following, with matches generally easy to get tickets for compared to the Sevens — a lower-key way to see live local sport if your dates don't line up with a bigger event.

Checking what's on

Match and event calendars shift year to year — checking current listings for your specific travel dates is the only reliable way to know what's actually on while you're there.
