Fishing & boat charters

Beyond the junk boat parties already covered elsewhere on this site, chartering a smaller boat specifically for fishing, or joining an organised sea-fishing trip, is a genuine and accessible way to spend a day on Hong Kong's water.

Sea fishing trips

Operators, mostly based out of Sai Kung, run half-day and full-day sea fishing trips with equipment provided — a relaxed, low-skill-barrier way to spend time on the water rather than a serious sport-fishing expedition.

Chartering your own boat

Smaller sampans and fishing boats can be chartered directly, generally through informal arrangements with operators at piers in Sai Kung, Aberdeen or the outlying islands rather than a formal booking platform — asking locally or through your hotel concierge is often more effective than searching online.

What to expect

Catches are typically modest and the experience is more about being on the water than serious angling — a good half-day activity rather than a full day commitment, and easily combined with a seafood lunch at one of the destinations already covered in our Food department.

Licensing and rules

Recreational fishing in most Hong Kong waters doesn't require a licence, though some marine parks and reserves have specific restrictions — worth checking with your operator rather than assuming blanket rules apply everywhere.
