Drone flying & photography rules
Hong Kong permits recreational drone flying in principle, but with real restrictions worth understanding before packing one — getting this wrong can mean a confiscated drone or a fine, not just a missed shot.
Airport and flight-path restrictions
No-fly zones extend around Hong Kong International Airport and under flight paths, covering a meaningful stretch of Lantau and parts of the wider territory — check current restricted-zone maps from the Civil Aviation Department before flying anywhere near the airport or approach corridors.
Country parks and other restricted areas
Some country parks and nature reserves restrict or ban drone use to protect wildlife and other visitors' experience — rules vary by specific park, so checking ahead rather than assuming blanket permission is worth the extra step.
Registration and weight thresholds
Heavier drones may require registration and, in some cases, an operator qualification — requirements have tightened in recent years, so checking current rules directly with the Civil Aviation Department before travelling is more reliable than relying on older information.
General photography etiquette
Beyond drones, ask before photographing individual people directly (particularly at markets and religious sites, already covered in our temples guide), and be mindful at residential spots like Choi Hung Estate (see our photogenic spots guide) that these are people's homes, not a backdrop.
