Tsuen Wan, up close

Tsuen Wan sits in the western New Territories, one of Hong Kong's earliest large-scale new towns, built up substantially around textile manufacturing from the mid-20th century before shifting toward its current mixed residential and commercial character.

Sam Tung Uk Museum

A preserved 18th-century Hakka walled village, restored and converted into a museum showing traditional rural life before Tsuen Wan's new-town development — a useful, compact counterpoint to the district's otherwise modern feel.

Yuen Yuen Institute

A large Taoist temple complex on the hillside above Tsuen Wan, notable for a distinctive round main hall modelled on Beijing's Temple of Heaven, and generally quieter than the busier temples covered elsewhere on this site.

Tai Lam Country Park

Tsuen Wan is a practical access point for this large country park, popular with hikers and mountain bikers (see our cycling guide) and covering a substantial stretch of hills toward Tuen Mun.

Getting there

Well connected by MTR (both the Tsuen Wan Line and the West Rail Line pass through the area), making it one of the easier New Territories districts to combine with a day exploring further west.
