Tung Chung, up close
Tung Chung grew rapidly after Hong Kong's airport relocated to Lantau in 1998, and now functions as most visitors' first stop on the island — a new town built around the MTR station rather than a historic settlement.
The cable car terminus
The Ngong Ping 360 cable car departs from Tung Chung, climbing up to the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery — the most common way to reach them without a long bus ride.
Outlet shopping
Citygate Outlets, next to the MTR station, is one of Hong Kong's main outlet malls, popular with visitors connecting straight from the nearby airport.
A base for exploring Lantau
Its MTR and bus connections make Tung Chung a practical, if unglamorous, base for reaching Tai O, the Big Buddha, and Hong Kong Disneyland without needing to go into the city centre first.
