Yuen Long, up close

Yuen Long anchors the western New Territories, a large new town built up around a much older market centre, with some of the region's best-preserved walled villages within easy reach.

Kam Tin walled villages

Nearby Kam Tin holds several centuries-old walled villages belonging to the Tang clan, one of the "Five Great Clans" of the New Territories, with narrow lanes and defensive walls still largely intact — among the most complete examples of this kind of settlement in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Wetland Park

Already covered in our birdwatching guide, this sits within the wider Yuen Long area in Tin Shui Wai, making Yuen Long a practical base for combining wetland walks with the older walled-village sites.

A genuine market town core

Yuen Long's older streets retain a busy, traditional market character, with wet markets and long-established local shops alongside the newer town's shopping centres.

Getting there

Reachable by the MTR West Rail Line or the Light Rail network already covered in our Tuen Mun guide, making it straightforward to combine with a wider day exploring the western New Territories.
